It stands on an area that was already fortified with a stone castle in the Middle Ages. With the development of firearms, the Spandau castle no longer offered protection. Thus, from 1560 to 1594, the Brandenburg Elector Joachim II had a modern defensive fortress built as western protection for the residential city of Berlin-Cölln.

The specialist Italian architects Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and Rochus zu Lynar designed a symmetrical complex with four bastions, completely surrounded by water. The ramparts and the defense galleries underneath were designed and equipped in such a way that attackers could be detected from anywhere and put under fire.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”14853″ img_size=”350×180″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

History

Learn more about the dramatic and eventful history of Spandau Castle.

[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Learn more” style=”custom” custom_background=”#000000″ custom_text=”#ffffff” shape=”square” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zitadelle-berlin.de%2Fen%2Fcitadel%2Fhistory%2F||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”12677″ img_size=”350×180″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

Architecture

Impressive buildings from the 16th century to the 20th century

[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Learn more” style=”custom” custom_background=”#000000″ custom_text=”#ffffff” shape=”square” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zitadelle-berlin.de%2Fen%2Ffortress%2Farchitecture%2F||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”12679″ img_size=”350×180″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

Julius Tower

The oldest secular building in Berlin was built at the beginning of the 13th century.

[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Learn more” style=”custom” custom_background=”#000000″ custom_text=”#ffffff” shape=”square” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zitadelle-berlin.de%2Fen%2Fcitadel%2Fjulius-tower%2F||”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_separator color=”black” border_width=”3″][vc_column_text]

Guided Tours

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”13065″ img_size=”350×180″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

PUBLIC TOUR

The public guided tour of the Citadel gives an insight into the eventful history of the place and takes you from the master builders in the 16th century to the 20th century.
