Guided tour | The Archaeological Window. Spandau Citadel and Life Together in the Middle Ages

Citadel

Sunday 1.3.2026 3.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m.

At the foot of Berlin’s oldest secular building, the Archaeological Window at the Spandau Citadel displays—alongside the excavation area with the remains of a Slavic timber-and-earth rampart, the subsequent stone castle wall, and the Renaissance palace complex—the oldest known medieval Jewish gravestones in the Berlin region. These were presumably removed from the Jewish cemetery in Spandau in the 15th century and reused in the construction of the fortress. What do these finds reveal about the diverse urban society of medieval Spandau?

The tour will be in German.
