The interventions by Simone Zaugg and Pfelder explore the concept of concealing, wrapping, and partially burying so-called toxic sculptures – a counterpoint to the museum “Unveiled. Berlin and Its Monuments” in the neighboring building. This shifts the focus from purely visual perception to other senses, such as hearing, touch, and smell. Zaugg and Pfelder’s artistic interventions on the historical objects enter into a dialogue with the sculptures by Amer Al Akel. Al Akel’s works can be understood as contemporary counter-designs to the oversized monuments: monumental enlargements of everyday objects, ephemerality as sculpture, and memories of non-German histories that have nevertheless become part of the collective memory in Germany’s migration society.
