Friday 9.10.2026 6.00 p.m. - 6.59 p.m.
The head of the famous Lenin monument from Lenin Square (now United Nations Square in Friedrichshain) has been on display since 2016 in the permanent exhibition “Unveiled: Berlin and Its Monuments.” The demolition of the iconic monument was accompanied at the time (and continues to this day) by public debate: Should all traces of the GDR disappear entirely from public spaces? The demolition of the monument also plays a central role in the film “Good Bye, Lenin!” (2003): The flight over East Berlin’s high-rises becomes a striking image of the GDR’s decline and the upheaval of an entire society.
Following the film, there will be a panel discussion with Knut Elstermann and N. N., moderated by Dr. Urte Evert. Join us in discussing Ostalgie films, GDR monuments in public spaces, and the cult of Lenin.
The film begins at 6 p.m. You have the opportunity to participate in a guided tour of the original Lenin head with museum director Dr. Urte Evert at 5 p.m. Please indicate when registering whether you would like to participate in the tour.
