‘Alcove’ means not only ‘sleeping place’, but also ‘tent’, “recess” and ‘cave’.
A place of community and isolation, but also a free space for dreaming…
“We venture into the niches of the citadel. Bodies produce sounds and react to the unique acoustics of the ‘alcove’. Is it possible to physically experience a space through the voice?”
In ALKOVEN, the audience is invited to enter architectural niches in order to experience them with their own bodies and voices. At the beginning and end of the event, cellist Ulrike Brand and dancer Ingo Reulecke sensitise the audience’s perception with a joint performance.
Together with Ulrike Brand and Elisa Kostka, participants build a toolbox of simple vocal sounds. We take our joint improvisations to the ALCOVES of the citadel, where Ingo Reulecke and Katharina Resch guide the group in filling niches together or presenting them as a group sculpture.
Ulrike Brand is a cellist, performer and composer. She has developed her own sound world on the cello using new playing techniques. Her music lies somewhere between improvisation and composition. She writes essays and holds workshops and guest lectures. She has received numerous scholarships from various institutions. Since 2018, she has been teaching improvisation at the Berlin University of the Arts.
Ingo Reulecke studied choreography at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin, after training in contemporary dance,. His choreographies have won numerous awards and been invited to numerous festivals in Germany and abroad. From 2012 to 2014, Reulecke was the artistic director of the collaborative project Bauhaus Tanzen. From 2006 to 2013, Ingo Reulecke was head of the dance department at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts / Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin. One of his main interests is real-time composition. His performances are created in collaboration with dancers, musicians and visual artists.
Elisa Kostka began her musical career in musical theatre, where she gained a wide range of experience in dance, singing, acting and choreography, both on stage and behind the scenes. Since completing her artistic and pedagogical studies in music and movement at the Berlin University of the Arts, improvisation – especially in voice and movement – and further training in bodywork methods such as Eutonie GA have become integral parts of her repertoire. In addition to teaching music and movement, she is also active in the performing arts, for example as an active member of the rhythm collective BELJIN6.
Katharina Resch first studied biology, then choreography at the hfs ‘Ernst Busch’ in Berlin. From 2010 onwards, she completed various further training courses in improvisation, contact improvisation, children’s dance and children’s yoga. In addition to her dance and choreography activities and interdisciplinary collaborations, she teaches dance and other forms of movement.
