A memorial has stood at the Putzlitz Bridge in Berlin-Moabit since 1987. It commemorates the more than 32,000 Jewish people who were deported from the Moabit freight yard to concentration and extermination camps beginning in 1942. The model of the memorial by Kladow-based artist Volkmar Haase has been part of the museum since 2021—as an example of public remembrance in West Berlin up until German reunification. Yet, from the time it was erected until today, the original memorial has repeatedly been the target of anti-Semitic attacks. Learn more about the memorial’s role in the conflict between West and East Berlin and its significance in German remembrance culture.
