Solo exhibition

12.6. – 19.9.2021

Center for Contemporary Art, Gallery upper floor

The sculptor Monika Brandmeier (* 1959 in Kamen, NRW) works also with formal reduction and material opulence. For the ZAK she is developing an extensive exhibition with installation objects, sculptures, drawings and video works that were created between 1984 and today. In the comparison, grouping arrangement or concentration of selected works, two basic approaches of the artist become clear:

Questions about the relationship between things and space are indeed constitutive for all of Monika Brandmeier’s works, but unfold above all in a series of installation arrangements into a range of analyzes that is as subtle as it is rich in detail. Inner space, surrounding space, interspace and non-space are the categories with which the artist, among others – also developed her moving objects and sculptures. On the other hand, materiality plays a role in the relationship between industrial semi-finished product and object play a further decisive role and allows the works to develop a narrative presence at times: “Precisely and precisely adjusted, they question a conventional, context-based visual culture and in doing so follow the idea of a poetic order and a subjective conceptualism.” (J.-O. Rey)
