Hartmut Kiewert’s artistic work deals with history, forms, possibilities and future of the relationship between humans and animals. Starting from the idea of peaceful and equal coexistence, the painter develops social images whose deeper meaning is an utopic visualization, in which animals are no longer objects of an exploitative practice from a marketing point of view, but rather they become subjects of a changed and emancipatory world order. Behind this seemingly romantic idea stands the critical examination of power structures and their mechanisms. Hartmut Kiewert’s large-format oil paintings are not only created in the awareness that our human attitude towards the animal world must radically change, but also that the repression of our predominantly economized and alienated treatment of animals should be countered by positive narratives.

Hartmut Kiewert (* 1980 in Koblenz) studied painting and graphics at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle from 2003 to 2010, where he graduated with diploma with distinction. The artist lives and works in Leipzig.
