The Spandau City History Museum has an important collection of splendidly designed historical flags and banners. These include items from former district, sports, choir, allotment garden, craft and war clubs, schools and the Spandau army workshops that existed until 1919.
Once again this year, students of museology from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences practised their skills in a two-week practical project to inventory the flag collection of the Spandau City History Museum. They recorded, digitised and documented the condition of the flags with the utmost care. They also researched their history and that of their institutions in the museum’s archive.
In the exhibition, they present two selected flags, which are supplemented by historical documents and photographs and provide an insight into the history of the flags. These are the flag of the Königliche Gewehr- und Munitionsfabrik Spandau made in 1887, which the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Heereskunde e.V. donated to the museum in 2023, and the flag of the Freie Schmiede-Innung von Spandau from 1927, whose flagpole was donated to the museum by the Heimatkundliche Vereinigung Spandau 1954 e.V. last year.
