The incorporation of Spandau in 1920 into Greater Berlin was an event for the people of Spandau that is still today – more or less jokingly – referred to as “compulsion”, sometimes even as “expropriation”. But why did Spandau resist so? What other topics were important in Spandau in the 1920s – and sometimes seem surprisingly topical: In the area of tension between the Berlin administration, Spandau magistrate and the everyday life of Spandau’s residents, the topics of transport, work, leisure, housing, the military and political clashes are presented. These were formative for Spandau around 1920 and are fundamental for today’s (self) perception of the district. Objects, texts and participatory possibilities reflect the change from the stubborn city to the self-deprecating part of Berlin.
On the day of the open monument (12. & 13.9.2020) the entrance is free.
