When “Unveiled: Berlin and Its Monuments” opened in 2016, exhibiting unwanted monuments was a completely new concept—and to this day, it remains unique worldwide. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, we’d like to look back: How did former museum director Andrea Theissen actually come up with this idea, and what hurdles had to be overcome before the exhibition was finally realized? But a lot has happened since the opening as well: Both the exhibition and the public discourse on monuments have continued to evolve. We speak with Dr. Urte Evert, who has led the museum since 2017, about (political) challenges, new monuments, and the opportunities the museum at the Citadel has opened up. We also look to the future and get an exclusive glimpse into the upcoming projects planned for this unique museum.
