The Open Monument Day has been held nationwide since 1993 as part of the European Heritage Days. In Berlin, it will be celebrated this year on 7th and 8th of September 2024. On Sunday, 8th of September, you can expect a diverse program around the fortress. Below you will find an overview of the special events and current exhibitions at the Citadel.

10 a.m.5 p.m. Exhibition: werkstatt denkmal: “Expedition Wahrzeichen Juliusturm” with works by class 4c of the Grundschule am Eichenwald | Bastion Kronprinz

10 a.m.5 p.m. “Pictures of the Spandau press office” | Bastion Kronprinz

10 a.m.5 p.m. Creative hands-on booths for young and old. With a bookbinding booth where upper school students can learn different bookbinding techniques for sketchbooks and study books. | Jugendkunstschule Bastion Kronprinz

10.30 a.m. Lecture followed by a guided tour: The gatehouse of Spandau Citadel and its renaissance around 1970 with restorer Karl Hiller | Gatehouse

11 a.m. Insights into the making of the exhibition “Unveiled. Berlin and its monuments” with collection manager Carmen Mann | Provision Depot

11:30 a.m. Citadel tour – 1200 years of history in 60 minutes

12 p.m. Guided tour: Traces of the Wehrmacht on the Citadel

12:30 p.m. Lecture: “The citadel as a historical site for bat research” with a brief insight into the vaulted corridors, Speaker: Jörg Harder | Bastion König, entrance to the casemate

1:30 p.m. Show depot tour: Guided tour of the new toxic monuments with museum director Dr Urte Evert | Bastion Königin

2 p.m. Citadel tour – 1200 years of history in 60 minutes

2:30 p.m. Guided tour: “The Archaeological Window. Spandau Castle and coexistence in the Middle Ages” Johanna Riedel and Christina Büch | Gatehouse

3 p.m. 100 years of the Spandau City History Museum. Museum work in listed buildings with collection manager Carmen Mann | Armoury

3:30 p.m. Scenic tour: “The Spandow Citadel in 1589! The wife of the fortress commander Ursula von Holzendorff welcomes the people and invites them on a tour.” | Gatehouse

4 p.m. Guided tour: “In Schinkel’s footsteps on the Citadel” with Dr Ralf Hartmann, Head of the Cultural Office | Gatehouse
