Hermann Bachmann (1922–1995), as a professor at the University of the Arts—now the UdK Berlin—exerted a profound influence on generations of artists. He taught there for thirty years, and his artistic and personal intensity often left a lasting impression. Both the impact of his painting and that of his teaching—which continues to this day—are the inspiration for the project *Widerhall*.
The participating artists are united by the desire to make Hermann Bachmann’s work and his significant position within all-German painting in the second half of the 20th century visible to current generations. Bachmann’s painting has been and continues to be highly regarded not only by his former students but also by many others, especially by colleagues from eastern Germany. He is considered a “painter’s painter.” Yet the themes of his painting also resonate with anyone who grapples with existential questions. The exhibition “Widerhall” presents, for the first time, works by Hermann Bachmann alongside current works by his former students.
