Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst – Lounge

Photographic portraits of artists will be on display in the lounge of the Alte Kaserne in 2018/19. As part of a series of exhibitions on this theme, photographers are invited to provide insights into their work and, above all, their view of colleagues.

The exhibition begins with the Berlin photographer Jürgen Baumann (*1958 in Dillingen/ Danube), who has also been accompanying the art scene in Berlin for many years as an artist, curator and lecturer at the TU. Baumann studied at the Berlin Lette-Verein from 1981-83 and has worked as a freelance photographer and photo designer since 1984.

In the mid-1980s he travelled as a street photographer in Europe and Russia, became co-operator of the legendary project space SOMA in a Kreuzberg glass showcase in the early 1990s, and in his artistic work he has approached the urban life of Berlin, but also the human body and the phenomena of nature.

Parallel to this, he has created and continues to create photo portraits of colleagues, artistic companions and prominent figures in the art world. In the lounge of the Alte Kaserne, Jürgen Baumann shows a selection of these portraits of well-known and lesser-known personalities, primarily from West Berlin’s cultural life of the past decades.
