A festival for Berlin.
»Passion Karneval«
10.02.2023 – 26.02.2023

SPAM – the new Berlin Early Music Festival will have the theme “Passion Carnival” from February 10 to 26, 2023, and will present numerous concerts with music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque. The venues are the historic premises in the Citadel and the Nikolaikirche Spandau. The festival program will be published in September 2022.

Thematically, the motto “Passion Carnival” is about the polarity between Shrovetide and Lent. Countless works from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque are tailored to these two events in the annual calendar and, with their exuberant or reflective character, illustrate the special character of these days. A selection of this music will be heard in about 20 concerts at the festival “SPAM – Spandau macht Alte Musik”. The spectrum ranges from exuberant Renaissance dances, humorous program music and excerpts from carnival operas to Passion settings.
In the selection of the performing artists, “SPAM” sees itself as a forum for Berlin ensembles that deal with early music, but of course international ensembles will also be invited.
